Start with a simple phrase
To order, you can say «Un café con leche, por favor» (a coffee with milk, please) or «Quería un café solo, por favor» (I'd like a black coffee, please). Quería is a common, polite way to ask for something. Prefer tea? Change only the drink: «Quería un té, por favor».
Listen for the next question
You may hear «¿Algo más?» (anything else?). Answer «No, gracias», or add «Sí, una tostada, por favor» (yes, some toast, please). If you miss a word, try «Perdona, ¿puedes repetirlo?» (sorry, could you repeat that?).
Server: Buenos días, ¿qué te pongo?
You: Un café con leche, por favor.
Server: ¿Algo más?
You: Sí, una tostada. ¿Cuánto es?
Server: Son cuatro euros.
Make it yours
Read the dialogue aloud and change the drink and food. Then repeat it without looking. For an extra challenge, imagine your first choice is unavailable: «¿Qué me recomiendas?» (what do you recommend?) keeps the conversation going.
